A week later

It’s been a week since the first eye. The blurry vision is a bit better, once the second eye is done I expect that to clear up – I’m praying for that anyway!!!!!! I still have pain in the morning, my eyes are apparently super dry so lots of drops during the day – and whoever decided that tip on the stupid Systane bottle was a good idea needs to be slapped, I’ve got very moisturized cheeks but not so much in my eyes! Limiting screen time is helping too. The second eye is scheduled for Monday so fingers crossed!

In other news, Maverick has developed a hot spot. Maverick also is deaf to my voice, he just looks at me and goes on merrily doing whatever he feels like. What he feels like is licking the hot spot, which will make it worse. It’s a dilemma, I don’t want to take him to the vet because he’ll get antibiotics, which always give him the runs and then he can’t go to daycare. Then he gets bored, and licks the hot spot more. I’m treating it with chlorhexidine, which is the go-to for hot spots, and he’s getting that area shaved today, so pray that it heals up quickly.

This is the kind of stuff no one realizes about grieving. It’s not just the huge, “Oh my God, he’s actually dead,” it’s the “there’s no one to help me with the dog, or the eye drops that run down my face, or figuring out why the water is dripping where the hose connects to the house.” Those are the things that can put you under.

Today it was that my eye hurt this morning. It’s always in the morning because they dry out overnight. (I’ve talked to my doctor about it) On top of all the other shit, I said “fuck this” and took a two hour nap. I’d probably still be sleeping but I got woken up by egg delivery. (Farmer has chickens, I need eggs, they show up the next day – it’s amazing!)

I have little interest in much as well. I run out of steam quickly. I know it’s been almost 3 months. It feels like 5 minutes, and 5 years at the same time.

But…… I’m starting to feel like I’m facing a new life. I’m starting to see glimmers of maybe. I’ll be okay. I have to be.

  1. Yes, it is always the little things throughout the day that get us.
I was going to try the Systane after my samples of Oasis ran out but if some idiot designed the tip, I’ll splurge on the other stuff.

It’s been two months since my cataract surgeries and some days things are still blurry. I’m going to wait another month before I decide to get prescription readers to make sure my eyes are completely adjusted to these new parts. My surgeon might be able to “tweak” these to get them better.

    • The blurriness bothers me because I’m here pretty much alone and I have to drive every now and again whether I want to or not so. I’m sticking the back roads. And driving with one eye. I really think a lot of this is because my eyes are so bad that there’s a huge difference now between the two.

      • Fortunately I had a chauffeur. I had some contact lenses that I could wear in the “bad” eye but I had issues getting them out. I even had to call my granddaughter in Colorado to walk me through it! And the lens didn’t correct the vision to my liking.
Hang in there. You’re doing great.

      • I have friends I can call on but I just hate to keep asking them for help all the time. Most of my problem right now is because of Maverick. I hate to ask someone to pick him up at 8 o’clock in the morning to take him to daycare. I have one friend who will do it but I hate to impose. Thank you for your kind words hopefully this will soon be a memory that will laugh about

I’m willing to bet that your friends understand and don’t mind (I meaning seeing is kind of important when you drive lol).

I’m having to reschedule my yearly eye exam because they scheduled it on my SS pay date which is also voting day, so I would have to vote before the dr apt so I could see the paper because after the dilation part of the exam, that is a questionable thing 😛 and I don’t want to drive after the eye exam to go to the bank, other errands and grocery shopping – it will be bad enough to just drive home from the eye appointment :P) so I’m changing the date. I do understand, being alone for these things suck, but I’ve been alone now for 21 years (oh my has it been that long?)!

I wonder if you could put something that didn’t taste good on the hot spot so he wouldn’t lick it? My parents use to put something called Thumb on my thumb because, yeah, I sucked my thumb as little kid. It did taste nasty, but I discovered I could wash it off, I doubt Maverick would figure that out :P. Probably a vet could point you to something that Maverick wouldn’t like the taste of. Is he allergic to any foods the day care is forgetting about? Maybe a vet could prescribe him an antihistamine, my hay fever allergies are going crazy! Just throwing those ideas out there in hopes something will stick, poor Maverick and in extension you :(.

    • When I picked him up from daycare the owner said if that was my dog I’d put a cone on him. I said I would if I had one. And she said wait a minute. Came back out with One and sent me home with it. So now he’s pouting and I don’t care. I swear he looked at me like what are you gonna do about it bitch so I just showed him what I was gonna do about it. He’s not gonna heal as long as he keeps licking it so this is what we have to do.

Systane also comes in individual vials. They dispense easier than the bottle. I get a kick out of the Soothe ointment. Try following THOSE instructions. Ha!

I know someone who made a T shirt for her dog so that the pup couldn’t reach and lick hot spots. Might a shirt work for Maverick? I ask because he might turn out to be a cone-bludgeoner like Geordie. G learned to beat me with the cone for his own amusement.

Can you take an Uber on bad days? Do you qualify for medical transportation due to your (temporarily) impaired vision? Do any churches in your area have a ride service that you can sign up for?

Oh, did your doctor say that warm compresses are OK for your eyes? That helps a great deal with tear production. If/when your eyes are healed enough, castor oil massage might also help. Rub a drop in near the outer part of the orbital ridge (under the outer edge of your eyebrow). Castor oil is supposed to help with inflammation.

Sending lots of love your way!

I think they make little cups now that you put over your eye before using the eye drops so it doesn’t get all over. You might want to look into that…Literally
