even though today, he went to the vet for his rabies shot, and since he had a sort of scratch on the side of his face, I asked Dr. Dave to check it.
Before that – we had a battle in the waiting room, he refuses to settle I know he’s stressed. So am I, Dude. Why am I stressed? Because doing physical battle with a 76 lb dog is a guarantee that I’m gonna lose. But I can’t let him run out the door, now can I?
Then we got called into the exam room. Another battle begins. No you can’t jump up on the bench, because I don’t need you to fall off, thanks.
The vet tech came in and tried to take blood. Nope, not happening. Two vet techs, plus me managed it.
And then Dr. Dave arrived. He pronounced the scratch a hot spot, and the real battle began. Took three of us, and Dr. Dave is a big man, to keep Maverick on the table.
All told the damage is thus: He slammed my elbow into the door, my hip into the exam table, my back is already shot and my right shoulder, which is normally good, got wrenched.
We had to go wait again to pay the bill. Normally I would put him in the car for this part, but the car has no A/C so we sat on a bench. Apparently I looked frazzled, a few people asked if I was okay. Yeah, I’m great, just in pain and frustrated as all hell, but otherwise, great!
I had told the daycare owner that I would bring him back for the afternoon and she said that was fine. While waiting to check out, she called. Oh, she misunderstood, I can bring him back tomorrow but not today.

I don’t know whether to laugh at Maverick or cry for you! I think your next dog needs to be a smaller dog, LOL, or an easier to train dog like a German Shepard ;). Hope you heal quickly !! Tell Maverick he’s on notice!

He’s definitely my last dog. Every time I say that people give me shit and I offer him to them for a week. He’s too high energy for this old lady – my fault, not his.

I bow to your perseverance with Maverick! I sure hope he’s not skittish about fireworks, that’s all you need for the next few days.

Oh he’s terrified of fireworks. The only bonus to that is his safe place is the craft room, so I get some sewing done.
Also, Bear hates cats. Just shoot me now!

The Kraken’s pit-bull is spending the week in the tub, we feel your plight! Craft room seems like a better option, for you at least!

Pepper takes an oral flea and tick medication. Today was the monthly dose. I crushed it and mixed it with pumpkin, cooked chicken, and mini treats. I had to put that combo on a regular plate so she would think it’s a special treat.

I buy the Fresh Pet meat roll – the only way Maverick will take his pills! I’m teaching a class till 8, and then there’s an adult beverage waiting for me!

Maverick is our second. Max, his predecessor, was calm and easy and kinda dumb but handsome. Maverick is the anti-Max. He’s wild and crazy and smart-and too damned handsome!

They ARE related! When we got Maverick, we got his pedigree back several generations – Max is actually his great uncle. I always say Max sent Maverick to me to pay me back for all the times I told him no more cookies. 🙂

Dang, my sister’s were high maintenance, maybe because they were show dogs. She showed the in the ring and also in the field.

Show Goldens tend to be high maintenance, true Maverick gets groomed every 6 months or so, Max was more often because he had super fluffy fur, Maverick is more sleek. Showing in the ring, that’s a LOT Of training! I used to be on the Golden Retriever Forum, was she there/

More than likely, it’s been about 8 or more years since she or her co-owner showed. Her kennel name was Brytlea I believe.

I admire that there is no “but” in your title as in “I Love This Dog, But…”. This is one lucky pup to have you as his mom!
I understand not having the stamina or physical strength to take care of a powerful dog. If, however, someday you find yourself sick of human company (I don’t imagine it will take long 😂) consider one of the little guys. I am having a great time hanging out with my neighbor’s Malt puppy. He is playful and smart and curious and affectionate (and also a little naughty). Most importantly he is only around 10 lbs. Even if he decides he doesn’t want to go somewhere, you can easily scoop him up and make him go anyway.
Just in case you find that you want canine company in your life again. 🐕

There’s no “but.” I love him too freaking much. He’s taught me a lot, most importantly that I don’t have the strength to do this again. I’ll love everyone else’s dogs, then I won’t feel like a complete failure when they’re shits
